A One Person Exhibition — Miami-Dade Community College, 1983

A One Person Exhibition

Miami-Dade Community College, South Campus Art Gallery
Miami, Florida
November 1–30, 1983

In November 1983 the South Campus Art Gallery of Miami-Dade Community College gave Lynne Golob Gelfman a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper. It came at a turning point. For most of the 1970s she had worked within a strict grid of triangles; in 1979 she painted her first canvas without them, and by 1980 color, texture and the imagery of Miami had begun to crowd the surface.

The works of 1983 carry that change to its full energy: arches, dots, zigzags and stacked windows, brushed in dense layers. The gallery published a booklet with an essay by the critic Leslie Judd Ahlander and a statement by the gallery director, Karen Valdes, who described the show as the culmination of a move from controlled gridwork to a brighter, more intense style.
