Trued Surface brought together ten paintings at Dimensions Variable, the artist-run space in downtown Miami, setting four new canvases from the thru series beside a 1978 canvas and five small acrylics on paper from 1980. In the thru paintings Gelfman worked from the back of the canvas to the front and back again, pushing paint through the weave so that the cloth itself becomes the grid, a method rooted in her long interest in textiles and in work she began in the 1970s.

The triangle runs through all ten works, from the small 1980 papers to the 2014 canvas, so the exhibition read as a single argument made across thirty-five years. The critic Alana Shilling wrote an essay for the exhibition, and a book, trued surface, was issued alongside it.
