Cadence, 1985–1989

Opening Reception: Friday, March 13th, 6–8:30 PM
Extended through December 2026

The Bonnier Gallery presents Cadence, a solo exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Lynne Golob Gelfman (1944–2020), at its Little River space, 51 NW 71st Street, Miami. Bringing together twelve works made between 1985 and 1989, the exhibition centers on a decisive stretch of the late 1980s, when Gelfman's visual language opened onto increasingly layered systems of color, gesture, and geometric structure.

In the six large-scale canvases on view, Gelfman builds dense fields of arcs, ellipses, and faceted planes that overlap, interrupt, and absorb one another—lattices that seem at once grown and engineered. Color is laid down, scraped back, and laid down again, leaving surfaces that carry the record of their own making. Across each composition, recurring forms set a measured pulse, a rhythm both spontaneous and deliberate, from which the exhibition takes its title.

Six acrylics on paper accompany the paintings. More intimate in scale and quicker in execution, they show the same vocabulary being tested at the scale of the hand, revealing the immediacy that underpins even the most complex of the canvases.

Cadence opened in tandem with Lynne Golob Gelfman: Works on Paper, 1960s–2020 at Central Fine, curated by Aramis Gutierrez and Loriel Beltrán and presented in collaboration with The Bonnier Gallery. Together, the two exhibitions offered a view of Gelfman's practice across more than five decades.
