Grids: A Selection of Paintings by Lynne Golob Gelfman

Pérez Art Museum Miami
1103 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami
September 15, 2018 – April 21, 2019

Grids brought fifteen paintings by Lynne Golob Gelfman, made between 1968 and 2018, into the galleries of the Pérez Art Museum Miami. The exhibition looked at her work through the modernist tradition of the grid: across her different series, repeated lines and geometric forms take up the late-modernist grid while refusing its rules, drawing as well on non-Western pattern and on the urban and natural landscape of Miami.

The selection opened with circle blue (1968), a field of circles painted in New York, and the thru paintings of 1974, in which Gelfman worked paint through the canvas from the back so that the weave itself became the grid. It continued with the late thru works (2015–2017), the tall breath paintings of 2018, large canvases from the greil, burqa and between series (1998–2008), and three lines black panels.
